Allegra
Allegra is
a highly effective antihistamine available
to treat allergies. Its particular value is
its safety factor; contrary to old line
antihistamines, side effects (sleepiness,
fatigue, and clumsiness) are virtually
absent. This translates to a dampening of
allergy symptoms without impairment of
judgment or loss of energy.
The
non-sedating antihistamines are classified
as second generation antihistamines. These
tend to be no more effective than the
traditional antihistamines, but their safety
factor is highly valued. The earlier
products, such as Chlortrimeton, benadryl,
pyribenzamine, and their derivatives, are
well known to affect wakefulness, thinking,
and functioning.
A drawback
to Allegra and the other newer products is
their higher costs. Most physicians
nonetheless recommend the non-sedating
preparations in preference to the
traditional over-the- counter brands due to
their lack of effect on the central nervous
system.
Allegra is
recommended from age 6 throughout adulthood.
There are multiple preparations: each is
taken by mouth, once or twice a day. One
form, a “D” preparation comes with an added
decongestant Allergic symptom of runny nose,
stuffiness, eye irritation, and sneezing are
generally improved within the hour.
Allegra is
a prescription product. For the right
prescription for you, please consult with
your doctor.
