Chlortrimeton
Chlortrimeton is the standard, old time,
first generation antihistamine and has been
an over the counter product for years. It
has been incorporated into multiple allergy
medications and cold preparations.
Its
popularity with million of allergy sufferers
knows no bounds.
However,
with the advent of second generation
antihistamines, its role in the management
of allergies, particularly hay fever and
indoor allergy has decreased significantly.
Physicians
today are writing prescriptions for the
likes of Zyrtec, Allegra, and Clarinex due
to their being essentially side-effect free.
Chlortrimeton, when metabolized, does enter
the central nervous system, and consequently
is responsible for side effects including
drowsiness, delayed reaction time, and
mental slowness. Collectively, these
traditional antihistamines, including
Benadryl and Pyribenzamine are said to cause
more highway accidents than are attributed
to from alcohol.
