Afrin
Afrin is a
nasal spray par excellence, relieving
nasal congestion almost immediately. It is
more effective than the oral preparations
and its benefit lasts for hours. It
relieves swelling whatever the cause -
allergy, irritants, or infections.
Afrin is not
a corticosteroid; it is a vasoconstrictor
–pooled secretions are squeezed from the
area, relieving congestion and opening the
nose.
On the
downside is a tendency to over rely on
Afrin. Particularly at bedtime, on lying
down, congestion peaks, resulting in
difficult breathing. The temptation to
reach for Afrin is great, thereby sowing
the seed for abuse. Afrin surely is
addicting. Many have succumbed to the
inclination; earning the title:
Afrinoholic.
Other
products like Afrin, include, 4-Way Spray,
Neosynephrine, and Vicks. Each is a
decongestant and wholly different from
another preparation, saline, (Salt water),
a moisturizer, which is recommended for
dry, irritated noses, and is well
recommended and is not addicting.
