Antibiotics
for sinusitis
Antibiotics for
sinusitis are NOT the primary option in
treating sinusitis.
Sinusitis is more an
inflammation than an infection.
It is a secondary
complication rather than a primary disease.
Common colds, nasal
allergies, and breathing foul air result in
rhinitis.
Rhinitis causes
blockage of the sinus openings causing
inflammation
The primary Rx of
sinusitis is relieving obstruction and
treating the cause.
Saline irrigations of
the nose are the first step. This is well
achieved through a modified water pik
system.
Known measures to
avoidance of common colds are to be
respected.
Exposure to allergies
is to be minimized and antihistamines
started early.
Breathing polluted air
is a community wide effort.
While controversial, I
next prefer starting oral corticosteroids,
the best of anti-inflammatory agents, when
the sinusitis worsens, or chest symptoms
begin.
Antibiotics are
reserved for an unimproved condition. I
prefer to skip the traditional (too much
bacterial resistance) and jump directly to
the Quinolones, Cephalosporins, and second
generation Macrolides and Penicillins.
(Review over the internet then check these
out with your doctor).
