Cockroach Allergy
• Found to
be clinically significant only 40 years ago.
• At first believed it an allergen of the
poor.
• Now known to cross economic lines.
• Mostly found in the kitchen.
• Must be part of the initial allergy
diagnostic skin testing.
• Causes the same distress as does the mite
and mold.
Management:
• Left over food to be promptly stored away.
• Stored food to be put in closed
containers.
• Water leaks to be repaired.
• Floor to be moped daily.
• Wall crevices to be sealed.
• Non-sedating antihistamines as needed.
• Intra-nasal steroid or Cromolyn spray
every day.
• Trial on Leukotriene inhibitor if needed
additionally.
• Allergy injection therapy if
insufficiently improved.
