Eczema
The skin suffers allergies
too. There are many forms of eczema. Some
are due to allergies, some not. These may
appear soon after birth or not until old
age. Some are due to foods. Some to
inhalants. Some to irritants. Some to
stress. The universal symptom is itching.
Corticosteroids are most helpful – applied
to the skin or taken by mouth.
ECZEMA IN TODDLERS. Eczema in
infants is conspicuous with red cheeks and
rashes in the bends of the elbows and knees.
The house dust mite, milk, eggs, nuts,
tomato, and oranges are common causes.
Steroids and avoidance of the possible
offending agent is a good starting point.
STEROIDS AND ECZEMA. Corticosteroids are one
of the most helpful of medications. None
other puts out the inflammatory fire better.
Effective, yes, but safe, maybe. Overuse in
children may lead to slowed growth. In
adults there is a risk of osteoporosis. That
steroids provide value is indisputable.
Problems lurk however when dosing is too
high or treatment too long.
