House Dust Allergy
The
allergen is a MITE and not a dust
Mites are 8 legged insects (Arachnids)
Mites feed on human skin peelings
(dandruff)
Mites mainly live in bedrooms
In the bed
In the carpet
Mites are most active in bed with us at
night
We are allergic to their feces
Their numbers increase with rising
humidity
House dust allergy is a year round
allergy (Often worse in winter)
Mites mainly cause a stuffy nose
Mites are an important cause of asthma
Diagnosis:
Dont assume house dust
allergy. Have an allergy skin test or
blood exam
Management:
Encase the mattress, box
springs, and pillow
Maintain room humidity below 50% (dehumidifier?)
Vacuum the carpeting regularly (Hepa filter attachment?)
Use a room air filter if warranted (commercial size is best)
Take non-sedating antihistamines as needed
Use intra-nasal steroids or Cromolyn spray every day.
Start allergy injection therapy if insufficiently improved.
