OTITIS, Ear
Infections and the
ALLERGIST
Particularly with children, ear infections
result as a complication of allergies.
However
uncomfortable the allergy (Itching, runny,
stuffy nose) it’s complications are most
dreaded: sinusitis, bronchitis, otitis, and
asthma.
A blue
ribbon panel of prominent Ear Nose and
Throat specialists recently advised more
complete medical management before surgical
insertion of aerating tubes. There had been
an over reliance on surgery.
Most
allergists are pediatricians. . Managing
allergies often prevents otitis from
occurring. Allergists are the likely
‘gatekeepers’ to manage ear infection; they
often discern otitis before symptoms are
evident (‘silent otitis’).
Otitis is a
nasty condition. Its complications include
hearing loss, poor school performance, and
behavior problems.
Those with
recurrent otitis should have an allergy
work-up. Managing allergies often prevents otitis from occurring. It’s not sensible
allowing otitis to smolder along because we
don’t deal with the likely cause.
